Hi All –
February has been a great month for college sport. Listed below you will see some updates on the sports front and also some significant dates of upcoming events. The men’s and women’s team from UL’s Superleague basketball programme bothWON the National Cup. This was a great achievement as no college has ever done this before. The UL Ladies defeated DCU Mercy convincingly and the UL Eagles defeated UCC Demons in a superb game.
The College Basketball squad both Men and Women are competing in the Colleges League semi finals next Tuesday (March 6th).
Coach Ronald Claes was in Australia for a training camp with the High performance. The camp went really well and while out there Chris Bryan competed in the Australian 10Km open water Championships on Feb 16th. Chris came in 5th which was super just coming off a training camp.
UL did a fantastic job in hosting the Collingwood (Soccer Intervarsities) with all visiting teams suitably impressed with our campus and facilities.
The UL Men’s team lost out in the first round of the Sigerson (Football) cup but the narrowest of margins against UUJ. The UL women’s team played in the Ashbourne (Camogie) cup and lost out in the Final to a strong Waterford IT team. The UL Hurlers are in the Semi Final of the Fitzgibbon Cup against UCC (Friday March 2nd) @ 15:30 in UCC.
Fresher Hurlers are doing exceptional with both Fresher 1 & 2 teams in the final next Thursday (March 8th). The intermediate hurlers are also in the final.
The ladies Football team have advanced to the Semi Final of the O Connor Cup, and will compete on March 24th & 25th
UL hosted the Ultimate Frisbee intervarsities and it was a great success, the majority of the games were played on the North Campus All Weather pitches and again all visiting teams were envious.
Our men won gold in almost half of the events at the Irish Indoors athletics championships at Nenagh. The combined ‘golden haul’ by our men and ladies was about one quarter of the total. They also dominated the Munster Cross Country held in Cork IT withKevin Chesser, Shaun McCormack, Fergal Smithwick, Jake O’Regan, Michael Carmody, Ray McInerney and Liam Feeley who brought home the Munster Colleges Cup.

The University of Limerick will host NCAA College Football team, University of Wisconsin Eau-Claire in a prestigious challenge game to take place in Limerick on June 10th 2012. The Blugolds are a well supported Division III programme who play in the WIAC Conference. The UL Vikings are one of the top teams in Ireland and have been frequent participants in the Shamrock Bowl in recent years. In 2011, they won IAFL South with a 8-0 regular season record.
New UL Club Boxing do superb at First Intervarsities. Here are the Significant Results for UL , Senior 64Kg Won Gold James McDowell, Intermediate 75Kg John King won Silver, Novice 71Kg made Semi Final Peter McCabe, Novice 64Kg made semi final Fionnbarr Thompson, Intermediate 71Kg made semi David Lewis. A fantastic result for a club that started in September this year.
Another First … The UL Tennis club played in the intervarsities hosted by UCC at Sunday’s well and in the plate final it was UL 1 verses UL 2.
· UL won at the intervarsities for the 3rd year in a row !!!! Well done to all involved.
